Judy's Reports to the Weston Mercury

18th February 2012

In Div 1, C & C Vipers seem invincible winning their latest match 8-2 against Winsc Rebels.  Andy Greed with three wins conceding a game each to Rebels’ Dave Hunt and Rob Hansen.  Kiem Mu lost to Hunt as did Neil Kirsopp though his match went to five games.

A good night for Winsc Renegades’ Paul Hayward who beat all three Vets A; Roger Crump in three, Colin Lewis and Ann Sandford both took one game from him.  Lewis beat Trevor Jones in three and was pushed to five games by Dave Williams. Vets had the winning doubles Lewis and Crump overcoming Williams and Jones but the match was won by Renegades 6-4.

In Div 2 if Winsc Wayfarers had a third player they could have snatched victory from C & C Cobras as it was they nearly made it.  Phil Yates beat Cobras John Barker and Mike Gould losing to Cobras’ Rick Hutchinson.  Rich Parker’s two were against Hutchinson and Gould.  The pair took the doubles 3-2 against Hutchinson and Barker.  Cobras won 18-17.

A high scoring win for Totterdown C against club mates Flamingos.  Garry Chell, Bert Hiscock both achieved three singles, Hiscock given a tough match by Flamingos’ Phil Orchard needing all five games to win.  Orchard beat Mark Price in five.  Luda Cronin and Darren Andrews were unlucky despite several close games.

Totterdown C won 29-5.

Vets C enjoyed a tough contest against Winsc Warriors; Anne Baker should be given an award for stamina as she had to play five games in all her matches, when she lost out to Garry Evry and Tony Chedgy but was rewarded with a win against Len Noble.  Evry went on to beat Pete Joiner and Cath Smith.  Noble had two, against Cath Smith in three and Joiner in five.  Joiner and Smith had one game in the doubles against Evry and Chedgy, Vets winning the match 27-14.

In Group B of the Archdale, Banwell B scored an excellent win over Vets A, using both their higher handicaps and their skills.  Leo Reid (16) and Jack Brent (14) won all their matches, Reid with a game lost to Colin Lewis (2) and Brent one to Roger Crump (2).  Katy Groom (17) held both Lewis and Crump at bay but fell to Len Noble (12) in three.  Banwell B won 8-1.

11th February 2012

In Div C & C Vipers were well pleased with their 9-1 result over Walton Wanderers, even Bill Bruton unable to win any points for Wanderers, though with a tight first match against Kiem Mu he just lost out 9-11 in the fifth.  Some consolation for Wanderers when Dave Grounsell and Gareth Edmunds beat Andy Greed and Mike Withyman 3-1 in the doubles.

There were very close games in the match between Vets A and Totterdown Demons, no player emerging unscathed.  Roger Crump had a chance against Demons’ Jason King who went off the boil briefly but Crump lost 8-11 in the fifth. Ann Sandford benefited from some net shots against Mike Summers, especially the last one, Ann winning 3-2.  Match of the night was between Vets’ Peter Butterworth with defensive style and Graham Cheeseman’s attacking play, which made for excellent watching.  Butterworth 10-8 up in the 5th couldn’t finish it off.  Vets won 6-4.

In Div 2 the youngsters of Banwell B played well against the experienced Vets C, Leo Reid beat Len Noble in three close games; Katy Groom won her 1st game with Tony Chedgy. Alex Chandler was unlucky not to take a point after several tight games.  He and Katy also won one game in the doubles against Gary Evry and Chedgy.  Vets won 27-5.

In Group A of the Archdale Cup, Banwell scraped a narrow victory over Totterdown Demons.  Max Jeremiah (8) played well to beat Jason King (7), Graham Cheeseman (3) and with his win over Mike Summers (9) gave Banwell a 5-4 match win.  Beth Atkinson (13) won two and was only beaten by King.

Wayfarers’ Rich Parker and Phil Yates both on 9 did their best against Walton Wanderers but without much success.  Both had close contests, Yates just losing in three to Andy Elliott (3), Parker went down on 18 & 19 against Bill Bruton (2.  Wanderers go through 9-0.

In Group B Totterdown C had two good high scoring wins, Garry Chell (11) and Mark Price (10) won their matches; Price found Leo Reid (16) and Jack Brent (14) a challenge needing three games to overcome them.  Rick Cross (10) won two but lost to Brent 18 & 19, Totterdown won 8-1.

Although Totterdown C won 9-0 against Winsc Warriors it wasn’t all one sided, Dave Parker (13) had a real battle in the third game against Totterdown’s Rick Cross (10).  Margaret Parker (17) did well in her first game against Garry Chell (11) just losing on 19.

Vets C set their seal on the match against C & C Vipers when Len Noble (12) just beat Beth Atkinson (13) by a close 18 & 19. Noble winning all his matches.  Max Jeremiah (9) high scorer for Vipers with two wins.  Jade Cope (8) and Beth Atkinson both beat Gary Evry.  Vets won 5-4.

Vets C, despite their higher handicaps, found Winsc Renegades tough opponents losing 7-2.  Gary Evry(10) took Vets 2 points by beating David Williams and Trevor Jones both 5 but fell to Paul Hayward (-3).  Tony Chedgy (11) and Len Noble (12) efforts went unrewarded.

27th January 2012

Totterdown C in the lead in Division 2 was helped by two good league wins.  Firstly they beat Winsc Warriors 30-6 with Rick Cross, Gary Chell and Bert Hiscock all achieving maximums. Warriors’ Dave Parker, Pete Joiner and Marg Parker picked up 6 points between them.

The 2nd match 29-4 was over a depleted Winsc Wayfarers.  Phil Yates beat Totterdown’s Bert Hiscock and took one game from Gary Chell.

2nd placed Vets C won 29-6 against Banwell A’s youngsters.  Banwell’s Beth Atkinson beat Gary Evry in five games and took one from Len Noble. Some close games for Isaac Boulton and Harry Skidmore saw them winning one each.

Winsc Warriors were piped at the post 18-19 by Totterdown Flamingos.  The teams all square at the doubles, a tough five games later, Nigel Andrews and Luda Cronin took the match beating Anne Baker and Pete Joiner.

It was a close match between C & C Cobras and Vets C which ended in a 29-13 win for Vets.  Gary Evry won all three singles, losing a game each to Cobras’ Rick Hutchinson and John Barker.  Hutchinson top scorer for Cobras with wins over Len Noble and Roger Norvill.

The young C & C Banwell A team managed to overcome their club mates Cobras by a substantial 22-12.  Max Jeremiah ‘pick of the crop’ won all his matches without losing a game, though Cobras’ Katy Groom gave him a run for his money and John Barker was unlucky to lose by only two points each game.  Hannah Cope managed to beat Katy in a hard fought 3-2 match, winning the last game having been 2-1 down.  Beth Atkinson, who improves every month, was unlucky not to win a game against a determined Rick Hutchinson.

A tough night for Vets A in Div 1 against C & C Vipers, though Peter Butterworth started the evening in fine style beating Vipers’ Neil Kirsopp in four, losing to Mike Withyman, always a difficult opponent.  His match against Andy Greed, another defensive player, was the longest of the evening before going to Greed in the fourth.  Roger Crump had problems with attack in his games against Kirsopp and Greed and had opportunities to beat Withyman just failing to get over the line.  Ann Sandford was unable to beat a consistent Greed and Withyman but came up trumps against Kirsopp.  Vipers won 8-2.

In form Paul Hayward of Winsc Renegades defeated all three Demons, Mike

Summers, Graham Cheeseman and Jason King unable to take a game from him.  Trevor Jones also with three had a tough match against Cheeseman before taking the fifth 12-10.  Renegades won 8-2.

Two teams met with only two players each and with similar handicaps in Group A of the Archdale.  Demons’ Mike Summers and Bert Hiscock beat Wayfarers’ Rich Parker and Phil Yates, Parker managing one game from Summers. Demons won 4-0.

10th January 2012

C & C Banwell were on level terms with club mates Cobras right to the final contest.  A new player for Banwell, 11 year old Harry Skidmore(17) made a good impression by beating John Barker (13) and Mike Gould (16).  Ewan Boddy (17) also played well had a close three games with Gould.  Beth Atkinson (13) won all her matches beating Rick Hutchinson (11) and Gould (16) in two but lost a game to Barker.  Atkinson had the pleasure of clinching a close match in the final contest when she beat Barker. Banwell won 5-4.

Cobras had better fortunes against Winsc Rebels in another close match to win 5-4, but needed their greater handicaps to keep the div 1 team at bay.  Cobras’ Leo Reid (16) won all three which included winning the close 9th match when he beat Rob Hansen (3) 11 & 12.Mike Baker (5) won two for Rebels, Dave Hunt (1) and Hansen one each.

Walton Wanderers couldn’t afford to let a point go  astray in their match against Totterdown Flamingos, Gareth Edwards (2) having a particularly tough time before overcoming Phil Orchard (15), Trevor Williams (14) and Nigel Andrews (8), with Andrews managing to take the 2nd game from him.  Bill Bruton (2) and Ray Jenkins (-3) won two each giving Wanderers a 7-2 winning score.

Winsc Renegades started three points adrift with only two players against Banwell B though both played hard and long most matches going to three games.  Banwell’s Max Jeremiah (9) beat both Renegades’ Dave Williams (5) and Trevor Jones (5).  Jones also fell to both Alex Chandler (16) and Jack Brent (14) in close games.  Banwell B won 7-2.

21st December 2011

It was a good result for Winsc Rebels in the Archdale Cup’s Group A, despite having to fight for every point due to Flamingos’ higher handicaps.  Rebels’ Mike Baker (5) and Rob Hansen (3) won all their matches but Hansen lost a game to Nigel Andrews (8).  Dave Hunt (1) contributed one with a win over Andrews in three but Luda Cronin’s 16 advantage and Phil Orchard’s 15 proved too much.  Rebels won 7-2.

The match between C & C Cobras and Rebels wasn’t decided until the final match when Cobras’ Leo Reid (16) held Rob Hansen at bay 21-11, 21-12 completing his third win also beating Dave Hunt (1) and Mike Baker (5).  Mike Gould (16) and Rick Hutchinson (11) contributed one each to give Cobras a winning match 5-4.

In Group B, C & C Vipers were up against their club mates, Banwell B who fought hard to hold on to their advantage.  Leo Reid (16) won all three though had a tough encounter with Vipers’ Hannah Cope (14) before winning in three games.  Hannah was star of the Vipers team with wins over Alex Chandler (16) and Jack Brent (14) both in three.  Jade Cope (8) was unlucky not to take a point after hard fought games.  Banwell B won 7-2.

Mark Treasure (11) had a good match for Vets C against Winsc Warriors – beating Anne Baker (11) and Margaret Parker (17) in two and John Cook (10) in three.  Cook played well giving Warriors their two points with wins in three over Tony Chedgy (11) and Len Noble (12).  Vets won 7-2.

In League Div 2 it was a close match between Totterdown Flamingos and C & C Cobras.  Rick Hutchinson took out Flamingos’ Trevor Williams and Luda Cronin in three and Nigel Andrews in five tough games.  Andrews beat John Barker in five and Mike Gould in four.  A good win for Cronin when she beat Gould in four.  Cobras won 23-16.

Totterdown C’s 22-16 win was hard won over the youngsters of C & C Banwell A.  Garry Chell won all his matches but was taken to four by Banwell’s Max Jeremiah and only narrowly beat Hannah Cope in five games.  Jeremiah won two beating Phil Orchard and veteran Totterdown player Bert Hiscock.  A close fought 3-2 doubles went to Totterdown C.

3rd December 2011

In Div 2 of the Weston Table Tennis league the three youngsters of C & C Banwell impressed with their hard work and good attitude in their match against Winsc Warriors.  They were unlucky not to come away with more points.  Jack Brent won all three, and despite having some problems with chop and side spin, could be unplayable in a few seasons.  For the first time this season he beat his Granddad Warriors’ Pete Joiner in three.  Leo Reid and Katy Groom are becoming good steady players, Katy having some long hard rallies.  Everything was down to the doubles but a combination of brute force – Cath smith and deviousness – Dave Parker won it for Warriors 21-18.

Vets C had a nine point advantage over Winsc Wayfarers’ Rich Parker and Phil Yates but only managed to scrape home 20-18, parker and Yates winning all three singles and again the match hung on the doubles, Mark Treasure and Tony Chedgy taking it three to two giving them the vital two points.

Another close match was between c & C Cobras and Winsc Warriors, with John Barker pulling off all three singles, though all the Warriors took games from him.  Anne Baker beat Cobras’ Rick Hutchinson and Mike Gould.  Barker and Hutchinson taking the doubles in three gave a close 20-17 to Cobras.

Totterdown C took no prisoners against C & C Banwell B, Garry Chell, Rick Cross and Mark Price scoring max points.  Katy Groom won games from Chell and Price and Jack Brent one from Chell.  Totterdown C won the match 30-4.

In Div 1 C & C Vipers had two good results.  Totterdown Demons went down to them 8-2, Andy Greed taking all three, Kiem Mu and Jade Cope two each.  Jade found Demons Graham Cheeseman and Mike Summers hard going before beating both 12-10 in the fifth game.

Kiem Mu, Andy Greed and Mike Withyman all fell to a determined Winsc Renegades’ Paul Hayward, though Mu and Greed both managed one game from him. In a close doubles Greed and Withyman just easing out Hayward and Trevor Jones in the fifth to give Vipers a 7-3 match win.

How close can the scores get with close games and long rallies, and still end up as a 9-1 win for Vets A against Winsc Rebels?  Peter Butterworth won all three despite a five game set against Rebels’ Ros Hansen.  Colin Lewis won his three without losing a game.  Dave hunt took Rebels’ lone point in five tough games.

Bill Bruton was in top form for Walton Wanderers, winning all his singles against Winsc Rebels.  Rebels’ Dave Hunt won one game from him and went on to beat Ray Jenkins and Mike Harris. Hunt and Rob Hansen lost out in the doubles to Jenkins and Bruton in four, the match going to Wanderers 8-2.

20th November 2011

Off to a flying start in the Archdale Cup’s Group A, young players of C & C Banwell A made the most of their talents and high handicaps to win their first two matches.  In a close finish against Totterdown Flamingos the winning match won by Max Jeremiah (9) against Flamingos’ Phill Orchard (15).  Jeremiah also beat Trevor Williams (14) as did Beth Atkinson (13) and Orchard, both in three. Joe Gomm (16) had success over Orchard.  Nigel Andrews despite his 8 handicap beat all three Banwell players.  Banwell A won 5-4.

Banwell A had a convincing 7-2 win against experienced Div 1’s Walton Wanderers who had a tough fight for every point, only Bill Bruton (2) managing to overcome Max Jeremiah and Beth Atkinson.  Katie Groom (17) the star for Banwell won all three.

Wanderers had better fortune against Winsc Rebels.  Bill Bruton had a hard start against Rebels’ Dave Hunt (1) to win 21-18 in the third.  Hunt won his other matches against Dave Grounsell (2) and Mike Harris (0) in three.  Wanderers go through 6-3.

It was a good start for Totterdown Demons, Jason King (7) and Graham Cheeseman (3) winning all three in two games against C & C Cobras.  Cobras’ Rick Hutchinson (11) and John Barker (13) both beat Demons’ Mike Summers (9).  Demons won the match 7-2.

In Group B although Totterdown C started with a three point advantage due the Winsc Renegades only having two players they were made to work hard by Trevor Jones (5) and Phil Yates (9).   Jones took one game each from Rick Cross and Mark Price both 10 and Garry Chell 11.

A close match between C & C Banwell B and Vets C went right to the last game.  Banwell’s Leo Reid (16) securing the match from Tony Chedgy (11) 21-18 in the third.  Reid, Alex Chandler (16) and Jack Brent (14) all beat Vets’ Len Noble (12).  Top player for Vets was Gary Evry (10) with all three.  Banwell won 5-4.

In a re-arranged match in League Div 1 between Winsc Rebels and club-mates Renegades, the match did not start well with Rebels only fielding two players, Mike Baker having gone down with flu.  Rob Hansen beat Renegades’ Dave Williams with a pushing game going to five but lost to Paul Hayward and Trevor Jones.  Dave Hunt also lost to Hayward in four beating Renegades other two.  Hayward and Jones won the doubles giving them a win 7-3.

In Div 2, not a good result for Winsc Warriors despite some close games when they lost out to Winsc Wayfarers 30-1.  Anne Baker took a game from Phil Yates and lost narrowly to Simon Kneeshaw.  Rich Parker gave his dad Dave Parker no quarter, beating him in three close games.  The doubles was won by Rich Parker and Yates against Baker and Pete Joiner.

ARCHDALE CUP FINAL

Two First Division teams Winsc Renegades and Vets A faced each other for an exciting hard fought cup final.  The match started well for Renegades when Paul Hayward (-3) had a 3-1 win over Vets’ Peter Butterworth (0). Hayward showed why he heads the Div 1 averages, when he hits the ball it rarely gets returned. Renegades’ Dave Williams (3) put up a great fight before finally falling to Colin Lewis (2), just losing 20 & 18.  Next Vets’ Ann Sandford (6) versus Trevor Jones (1) saw Sandford win 18 & 20, pegged back despite a good start.  The following two games went one each Butterworth beat Williams 16 & 13; Hayward beating Sandford in three despite Sandford’s 9 point advantage.  The next point went to Vets, Lewis having two close games both 21-18 against Jones leaving Vets 4-2 up.  It was left to Sandford, playing up to the occasion to take the winning set 12 & 15 against Williams.  The match won, after some deliberation, the final two matches were played, both going to Renegades, Jones beating Butterworth and Hayward overcoming Lewis.

This was a first for Vets A, not having won the Archdale cup before.
